People, Planet & Technology #5
Ahoy folks 👋
It’s been two weeks again. I’ve put together some great articles and projects for you.
Probably nothing new to you, but the latest IPCC report has appeared and reports that it takes drastic measures to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. Half a degree more or less is not the end of the world! The NYT explains what a big difference this makes. And the Guardian has made a good summary of the report.
The PIK (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research) is developing a toolkit to help understand and communicate climate change scenarios. The first part is already published and explains what climate change scenarios are.
Some excellent interactive data stories have appeared in the Guardian:
The strange science of melting ice sheets: three things you didn’t know
‘We’re moving to higher ground’: America’s era of climate mass migration is here
Google has launched a service that allows you to be notified as soon as a flood threatens. For this, they have developed an AI that can predict these flood events (hopefully).
Have you ever wondered how to prevent birds from flying against buildings? Often this is deadly for the feathered friends. In Philadelphia, a building has been built that uses a variety of strategies to prevent this from happening.
👉 Miscellaneous things
An app warns you about bars and restaurants where it often gets too loud. (Fast Company)
A study found that higher temperatures lead to higher suicide rates. (The Guardian)
Short stories about the history of climate change
A Step-by-Step Guide for Fixing Badly Planned American Cities (CityLab)
How a Fortnite squad of scientists is hoping to defeat climate change (The Verge)
I hope you enjoy this issue. I would like to encourage you to send me your feedback via mail, twitter, mastodon or carrier pigeons 🐦.
We’ll read again in two weeks. 🙌
Take care. -Niklas
